Belgium may be set for a further relaxation of its abortion laws. TFP Student Action Europe sent a letter containing the ‘10-week doll’ to all members of the Belgian Parliament.

Abortion law in Belgium

Abortion was legalised in Belgium in 1990 up to twelve weeks, with a mandatory six-day reflection period. In 2018, the regulations were relaxed and incorporated into a separate law. Since then, pro-abortion campaigners have been trying to extend the limit further to eighteen weeks and to abolish the reflection period. A proposal to this effect failed in 2025 solely because MPs from the governing parties arrived too late for the vote.

Government set to give in to the pro-abortion left

Socialist and other left-liberal parties, in particular, have been pushing for this relaxation for years. Although Prime Minister Bart De Wever presents himself as a conservative and previously described an extension to eighteen or twenty weeks as a “disgrace”, that earlier statement offers no certainty. His party, the N-VA, no longer wishes to act as an “ethical spoilsport”. As a result, the protection of the unborn child is still at risk of being sacrificed to a political compromise.

10-week-old foetus

Volunteers from TFP Student Action Europe sent a personal letter to all Belgian MPs. The letter called on MPs to vote against the relaxation of the abortion law. A copy of the Catechism against Abortion and a 10-week-old foetus doll were enclosed with each letter. This served to make it clear to politicians who the victim is in the event of an abortion.

Belgian socialist condemns pro-life campaign

Left-wing pro-abortion politicians in Belgium reacted fiercely. Caroline Désir of the Socialist Party (Parti Socialiste) responded with indignation. She took offence at the fact that opponents of abortion continue to lobby MPs, thereby reaffirming her fight for policies that lead to more child deaths. According to Désir, the letter reminded her “how necessary and urgent it is to strengthen the right to abortion.” She calls it “a fundamental and even sacred right”.

Unintended effect

Désir voiced her grievances on Instagram, posting a photo of both the letter and the 10-week-old doll. In doing so, she is herself spreading the pro-life message and, unwittingly, highlighting the humanity of the unborn child. The message conveyed by the doll did not go unnoticed in the comments beneath her post either. “Abortion is destroying a human life; that is murder,” wrote one person. Another simply replied: “Long live life!” Her attempt to cast this pro-life campaign in a bad light actually sparked a debate about abortion. Therein lies the power of the 10-week-old doll. Abortion kills a vulnerable, innocent human being: not a ‘cluster of cells’ or a ‘foetus’, but a baby. By continuing to make the unborn child visible, public opinion can gradually shift towards a pro-life stance.

The pro-life perspective on abortion is often suppressed in the media and on social media platforms, whilst the abortion lobby is given free rein. So please share this article with family and friends, so that more people can see what abortion really is: the killing of an innocent unborn child.
